Western Sydney Schools pilot NSW Inter Schools Challenge Program

by tbreuer

Glenbrook Bowling Club hosted the first trial of Bowls NSW new Junior Participation program – The NSW Inter Schools Challenge.

The NSW Inter Schools Program is designed for clubs to partner with local schools to engage students in the sport.

The competition is played in BPL Cup style format with teams of triples playing 2 x 5 end sets.

Clubs have the opportunity to partner with local schools to provide basic coaching and to set up a competition to find winners to progress to further stages of the competition.

Teams must consist of at least 2 students who are not already members of a bowling club.

Students from Blaxland, Nepean & Kingswood High Schools competed in the first qualifying event with the winners progressing to regional finals to be held at St Johns Park.

The players were given tuition prior to play and had a sausage sizzle afterwards.

Bowls NSW would like to thank RBM Brett Hughes, Junior Committee member, Gavin Holburn and the coaches from Glenbrook on the organisation of the day.

In 2021, we are trialling the program at local/regional level with a State Event planned for the 2022 School year.

Some areas (Western Sydney; Northern NSW) have already established dates for play whilst other areas are in the planning stages.

Interested clubs can contact their local Bowls Australia RBM or Bowls NSW for more information.
