Open Gender Pennant Finals Off to a Great Start

The highly anticipated 2023/24 Open Gender Pennant Finals kicked off today across seven grades, with clubs commencing their battle for the prestigious pennant flag. Grade 1 began at Ettalong Bowling Club under glorious weather conditions, with the first two rounds now completed.

Cabramatta and Grandviews started strong, winning both of their matches to top Sections One and Two, respectively. Just a point separates Cabramatta and Soldiers Point at the top of Section One table. The leading club in each section after five rounds will advance to the final, scheduled for 1pm on Sunday, June 30th.

In Section One, Bateau Bay, Cabramatta, and Soldiers Point secured wins in the opening round. Each club won two rinks and earned 9 points, with Cabramatta dominating Mona Vale to claim all 10 points available.

Section Two saw tightly contested matches in the opening round. Grandviews triumphed over Warilla, while Port City edged out Gunnedah with a close 59-56 win, both teams earning 9 points.

Warilla suffered another defeat in Round 2, this time to Club Maitland City, which had a bye in Round 1 while Gunnedah also came up short against Grandviews.

Forster rebounded from a morning defeat to Soldiers Point with a decisive afternoon victory over Narrandera, earning a solid 9 points. Cabramatta and Bateau Bay faced off in a thrilling Round 2 match, with Cabramatta ultimately securing a four-shot win.

Soldiers Point nabbed a late win against Mona Vale in what was a cracking match. Soldiers point trailed by three shots going into the final end and they pulled off an incredible performance in the end to get four and snatch the win.

Young talents shone in the Gunnedah team, featuring 16-year-old Ella Cameron and U18 Boys’ Singles State Champion Timothy Thorning, who led his team to a rink win along with the competition’s youngest player, 13-year-old Jacob Martin.

Action continues across all seven grades tomorrow. Cabramatta and Soldiers Point will go head-to-head tomorrow morning at 8:30am and will be livestreamed on the Bowls NSW Facebook and Youtube channel. Live updates from all Round 4 matches at 1pm will be available on the Bowls NSW Facebook page.
