2023/24 State Junior Championships – Day 2 Report
The 2023-24 Bowls NSW State Junior Championships continued to unfold on Tuesday, 16th April, as the spotlight shifted to the thrilling singles competition. Across age categories spanning under 15s and under 18s for both boys and girls, participants geared up for a day of intense individual battles on the greens at Warilla Bowls Club.
Just like the opening day, the atmosphere at Warilla Bowls Club brimmed with excitement as young talents showcased their skills and determination, each harbouring aspirations of securing a spot in the finals later in the week.
As sectional play commenced on Tuesday morning, competitors squared off in a quest to advance to the quarter-finals for the under 15 and under 18 boys and semi-finals for the under-15 and under-18 girls slated for Friday. Spectators were once again treated to thrilling games of bowls, with each game adding to the unfolding drama of the Championships.
Reigning under-18 singles champion, Tim Thorning of Gunnedah booked himself a place in the quarter-finals after overcoming Cooper Fliedner in the round of 16 stage setting up a quarter-final clash against Harrison Conroy of Wagga Rules on Friday. In the girls semi-finals, which will take place on Friday morning, Katie Astley (Merrylands) will face Tarnee Ingram (Manilla) while the other semi-final will see a clash of clubmates as Chanel Chakouch and Jasmine Smith of St Johns Park face eachother in the under-18 competition. Annabelle Teague (Caragabal) will compete against Zoe Davies (Engadine) and Hannah Salatnay will face Lily Kirk (Merrylands) in the under-15 competition.
With the semi-finalists of the under-15 and under-18 girls singles competition and the under-15 and under-18 boys singles quarter-finalists now determined for Friday, focus now turns to the eagerly awaited fours competition. Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, the day will kick off with sectional play, paving the way for an action-packed afternoon featuring the highly anticipated quarterfinals at 4:30 pm.
