Cougars in Hunt for Back-To-Back Titles
Reigning Open Champion of Club Champion Pairs winners Craig Donaldson and Callum Murray (Engadine) are in contention to retain their title after making it through a tough sectional draw.
Coming into Round 2 with a win under their belt, Donaldson and Murray squared off against Michael Clarke and Shawn Thompson (Merrylands). Fresh from winning the Open State Fours Championship at Ettalong just over a week ago, Clarke and Thompson have been in good form. They put Engadine to the test, but Donaldson and Murray were able to hold firm, winning the match 25-18.
It didn’t get any easier for them in the afternoon in what was a must-win match against St Johns Park. After sustaining an early lead over the Saints pairing of Cameroon Cooper (sub) and Josh Berry, St Johns Park fought their way back, but once again Engadine held on to win by a single shot, 20-19.
Joining them in the semi-finals are David Hall and Kent Price (Park Beach), Dave Thomas and Jay Breust (Malua Bay) and Shane Gibbin and Josh Zephyr (Halekulani). All three sides went through sectional play unbeaten, and special mention must go to Thomas and Breust who amassed a +41 shot margin across their three matches.
Semi-final action kicks off Tuesday morning with the following matches:
