2021 Open State Championships – Day 6 Wrap

by Billy Johnson

The blue-ribbon events of the Open State Championships has begun, with the Open State, Senior and Reserve singles in full swing. Two rounds of sectional play have been completed and the section ladders are taking shape. With one round of sectional play to go, many semi-final spots are still up for grabs across the three events.

Open State Singles

Josh Berry (St Johns Park) will play David Ferguson (Engadine) in what is effectively a quarter-final clash in their section with the winner guaranteed progression into the semi-finals. In an added bonus for viewers, this match will be live streamed on the Bowls NSW Facebook page.

Kenta Treacher (North Sydney) and Lee Stinson (Warilla) are both unbeaten in their respective sections, needing a third round win to guarantee an appearance in post-sectional play. Treacher earned his wins the hard way, getting up 31-30 in both matches!

David Govan (Beresfield) leads his section heading into the third round and a win against Zeljko Trbara (Merrylands) will see him through.

Open Reserve Singles

Jeffrey Nunn (Blacktown Workers) and Peter Hutchinson (Malua Bay) lead their sections with two wins, and Phillip Hall (Urunga) can win through his section with victory over Steven Clarke (South Lismore). Clarke and Troy Allard (Cabra Vale Diggers) are both still in the hunt to win Section 3.

Section 4 is wide open with Shannon King-Mokaraka (Tuncurry Beach) currently leading, but a win to Troy Brown (Coonabarabran) tomorrow morning would guarantee his passage into the semi-finals. Paul Hodkinson (Castle Hill) also has an outside chance of qualifying should he beat Brown by 18 or more shots.

Open Senior Singles

Tony Shoebridge (Bateau Bay), Terry Warder (Harbord) and Bernie Melville (Alexandria-Erskineville) are all undefeated in their sections with a game in hand, meaning victory in their final rounds will secure a semi-final spot for them. Interestingly, in Section 3 Steven Fuller (Armidale City) and Wayne Lambourne (Telarah) are both on two wins and will play each other in Round 3 to determine the section winner.
