2021 NSW State Junior Pairs Champions

by Billy Johnson

The 2021 State Junior Pairs Final will go down as one of the best matches in U18 history after all four finalists put on a show on the Warilla indoor green.

In the 15 ends of regulation play, just one score of 3+ was recorded, highlighting the quality of the heads and how the superior tactical play from both teams made it difficult to pick up multiples. After 15 ends, the two teams still couldn’t be separated, with the scores locked at 9 – 9, meaning that an extra-end would decide who would emerge victorious.

Most people would be forgiven for letting nerves get the better of them in an extra-end of a State Championship final, but this simply wasn’t the case for Brendan, Bailey, Ryan and Travis. All four players produced arguably their best bowls of the match, with the extra-end killed by both skips before finally being completed on the third attempt. It took a pinpoint shot from Bailey Meti to secure the title for Zone 15, sitting out the Ryan Hansen shot bowl and trailing the jack a foot to hold game. Travis Moran could not convert with his last, allowing Bailey and Brendan Stokes to hold on for the win in an absolute classic match.

Congratulations to Brendan Stokes and Bailey Meti (Zone 15) on winning the Bowls NSW State Junior Pairs Championship and well done to Ryan Hansen and Travis Moran (Zone 13) on their runner-up finish.
