Women’s State Pennant Finals – Day 1 Wrap

by Billy Johnson

A mix of upsets and strong starts have headlined Day 1 of the 2021 BCiB Women’s State Pennant Finals. In Grade 1, Cabramatta have made the perfect start to their campaign recording a strong 17 shot win over Springwood this morning before battling past a persistent Cudgen Leagues side, prevailing 55 – 37. Interestingly, despite their two wins, Cabramatta sit third in Section 1 behind Taren Point and Dubbo City who have both finished the day unbeaten. Dubbo City’s superior shots margin has them on top, although there are still plenty of rounds to go!

In Section 2, Port Macquarie City provided the biggest upset win of the day, defeating a strong Raymond Terrace outfit 48 – 34. They consolidated that result with another win in the afternoon, beating Belrose. Charlestown also recorded two wins on the day and sit first on the ladder courtesy of winning every rink across their two matches. With three rounds of sectional play still left to complete, every team still has a chance of qualifying through to the final. The next two rounds will certainly provide a clearer picture of who is the best chance of making the Grade 1 State Final.

In Grade 3, hometown qualifiers Tuncurry-Forster Sports had a tough first round loss against East Maitland 45 – 29. Other winners from Sections 1 and 2 were Brunswick Heads, Wyong and Parkes, the latter two teams claiming victory by a slim one shot. The Rules, Majellan and Merimbula Imlay also enjoyed first round wins.
